M-Path ride a congenial morning

Several newcomers joined a handful of Green Mobility regulars for last weekend's M-Path ride from Coral Gables to the Miami River and back. The path was in much better shape than on the last ride a month earlier, though we found broken pavement near Metrorail's Coconut Grove station that still needs repair. There also are plenty of places between Douglas Road and Vizcaya where the edge of the path has eroded or been broken by motor vehicles.

Miami mayor carves ambitious path for new bikeways
Outgoing Miami Mayor Manny Diaz making one last push for bicycles
On his way out of office, Miami Mayor Manny Diaz aims to leave the city's long-bereft cyclists two reasons to be happy this week.
The first: Sunday is the last Bike Miami Days of his tenure -- and, perhaps, the last one, period, unless Diaz's successor picks up the recurring, car-free downtown street festival. This edition, which runs roughly from Mary Brickell Village to Bayfront Park, will feature popular local bands playing in the middle of Flagler Street, loaner bikes, free swag and an appearance -- on wheels? -- by Tim Hardaway, whose foundation is sponsoring a kids' corner.
Then, on Thursday, the City Commission will vote on Diaz's ambitious bicycling master plan. A first for Miami, the 20-year plan would establish a comprehensive network of bike lanes, designated bikeways and bike-parking facilities to make city streets safer and more appealing for the city's fast-growing cadre of commuting and recreational cyclists.
Miami rides a green wave toward a 'bike friendly' city
A: It's the traffic, stupid!
Q: What's the reason so few people in Miami bicycle even though it's warm all year and the terrain perfectly flat?
Whether it's out of fear of getting crushed by two tons of speeding metal, the clueless motorists or the near-total lack of bike lanes, Miamians have long been notoriously bike-averse.
Bicycle lanes on Rickenbacker Causeway first of many Miami cycling projects
Miami's long-downtrodden but growing community of bicyclists is reaping a sudden bonanza. Miles of new bike lanes, and plans for more. A new monthly, family-friendly bike festival downtown. And a clutch of bike-friendly proposals designed to promote cycling for recreation and commuting.
Miami-Dade County on Saturday will formally inaugurate dedicated bike lanes along the full length of the Rickenbacker Causeway by closing half the roadway for the morning and letting cyclists, roller-bladers and pedestrians have the run of it.
The following weekend, on Jan. 18, the city of Miami will host the third, expanded edition of Bike Miami Days, the monthly effort by the administration of Mayor Manny Diaz to promote urban fun and safe cycling by closing off streets in downtown and the Brickell area in hopeful emulation of the famed Ciclovía in Bogotá.
Miami Bike Summit discusses making city more bike-friendly
Pedaling toward the creation of a more cycling friendly city, Miami held its first Bike Summit on Monday to discuss the evolving Bicycle Master Plan and ask the public how to develop it.
Members of the Bicycle Action Committee, city staff, planners, cyclists and neighbors participated in the meeting at the José Martí Community Center in Little Havana.
There was an overview of the plan and a talk about other cities have successfully become more bike friendly.
Event to celebrate Rickenbacker Causeway bike improvements
If you like biking, you might want to take a spin with others on Saturday's Ride the Rickenbacker.
Five miles of the Rickenbacker will be car-free for cyclists to ensure a safe ride Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
The event is to celebrate the completion of improvements to the Rickenbacker Causeway and its bicycle lanes. The event also celebrates the move to make Miami-Dade County a mecca for cycling.
