"Once a Runner" returning to print

Once a Runner, a cult favorite among distance runners, is returning to print in April, thanks to Scribner's. There's a nice piece about the John L. Parker novel at Slate, http://www.slate.com/id/2206025/?from=rss.

There's even a trailer at YouTube:

Green Mobility visits UM campus

Green Mobility Network provided safety and riding tips to students at a "bike smarts" workshop organized by the Tri-Canes, the University of Miami triathletes. We competed with Matt Damon for attention during the midday bustle at the student center, but had some good conversation with several young men and women. If you missed the chance to get our handy tips for bicycle commuters, let me know. You can write via the "contact" menu at the top of the site.

Greenway advocates get a big hand up

Congratulations to the Naples Pathway Coalition, who just announced they've won a planning grant for the River of Grass Greenway -- a visionary multi-use path through the Everglades from Naples to near Miami. The grant is coming from the National Park Service under their Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program:

Miami commission OKs first bicycle plan

There was a big win for Green Mobility this week. The Miami City Commission approved, 5-0, the Bicycle Action Plan offered by Mayor Manny Diaz to set the city on the path toward true bicycle-friendliness. We've been working for this since February, but to underline its importance we held a demonstration ride outside City Hall before the commission meeting. Mayor Diaz and Commissioners Joe Sanchez and Marc Sarnoff joined us on the ride, along with Police Chief John Timoney and several other city officials.

Congress Passes Commuter Act

Employers of people who bike to work stand to gain a $20 per month tax credit per cycling employee, according to the final version of the Wall Street bailout bill, H.R. 1424, passed this afternoon. The House passed the bill today (Oct. 2, 2008) with a final vote of 263-171, a comfortable margin that was 58 more votes than the measure garnered in Monday's stunning defeat. The Senate passed the bill Wednesday by a vote of 74 for and 25 against the bill. -- Bicycle Retailer and Industry News
